Questions???  Here's an explanation of these items:

Description of Donations needed for “Newborns in Need”

Beanie Snake – These are used in the incubators to help position the babies.  The “snakes” are filled with very small plastic pellets.  The infant can be rolled on their side up against the “snake” so they aren’t always lying on their back.  The “snake” can also be curved and used as a pillow.

Burp cloth  (see "Patterns")
Diaper bag  (see "Patterns")
Half circle bootie – very simple booties that can be made from scraps of fabric; very inexpensive.

Hat – can be made on a loom, crochet or knit.  The looms are very easy for teenagers to make, boys and girls.

Note cards
1.      They are made available to nurses in NICU.  Many preemies are in the NICU for several weeks to months.  They nurses get very attached to them.  They can use the cards to write a note to the parents as the baby goes home.
2.      They are given to moms whose babies are in the NICU for an extended period of time.  These moms usually need lots of help from family and friends during this time.  Moms can use these cards for Thank You Cards.

Pig
1.      The toy pigs are made out of soft fleece and used in NICU in the incubators to place on the baby’s tummy to keep the tubes and cords off their delicate skin.
2.    They are also used in the “Newborn Kits”

Quilt- 36x36 up to 45x60
Receiving blanket
1.     Single piece of flannel with hem around the edge is used during the summer.
2.    Two pieces of flannel sewn together as a front and back, is used mostly during the winter.
3.    Fleece finished with the blanket stitch is used during the winter.

Wash cloth – These are handmade either crochet or knit.  White is used for the body and basic colors either solid or multi-color for the edge.  Use only cotton yarn.

Burial Items
The Burial Kits are available when nurses determine there is a need. Parents suffering the loss are not in an emotional state or cannot find the items we provide.   We try to keep several kits in stock for them to let the parents pick the particular kit they like the best.  They can choose to have the baby buried in the afghan or blanket and then keep the other for a memory gift.  The butterfly toy is usually kept by the parents also.

1.     Afghans – crochet or knit, any pattern.  Best if they are white or light variegated colors.  Sizes needed are: 12x14, 15x19 and 20x24.
2.    Blankets – We use very special blankets appropriate for burial, one side  must be solid the other can be print.  Any colors can be used except red.
3.    Burial Pouch – These are used for very tiny preemies.  They are crocheted and the lining has a plastic layer sewn in.
4.    Dress or bubble outfit for larger full term babies.
5.  Hat
6.  Bootie
7.  Memory Toy

Newborn Kits
These kits are available for nurses to give families in need.  Many babies would go home in just the diaper if not for these kits.  They contain:
Outfit, receiving blanket, burp cloth, soft toy, hat, socks or booties, bundle of 5 disposable diapers, baby soap wrapped in a handmade wash cloth.

Purchased Items – baby or ivory soap, disposable diapers, onesies

Used Items – some of the facilities we deliver to can use used baby clothing if it is gently used and in very good condition.  Please soak the used items for 3 days in powdered oxy clean, then wash before donating.  This gets rid of most light stains.
